After nearly 16 years, it’s time to say goodbye to Ferguson Books — and to what most recently became Fergie’s Bookshops.
This decision has been made with much prayer, reflection, and honest discernment. What began as a simple belief in the power of books and community grew into something far bigger than I ever imagined. Over the years, having 4 stores in 4 different cities across North Dakota, Ferguson Books became places of discovery, connection, generosity, and shared moments — from first books and lifelong favorites to bag sales, author visits, school partnerships, and countless conversations that mattered.
These stores existed because of people. Customers who showed up again and again. Families who made them part of their routines. Teachers, librarians, authors, nonprofits, and local partners who believed in what we were building. Staff members who poured heart, patience, and care into the work — often far beyond what the job required. And my family, who lived every high and low of this journey alongside me.
Bookselling is meaningful work, but it is also hard work. The past few years in particular brought challenges that tested sustainability, energy, and capacity in ways I couldn’t have predicted when this journey began. Through prayer, counsel, and careful consideration, it became clear that this chapter was coming to a close.
Our last day operating inside Daily’s Market will be January 30. We strongly encourage anyone holding gift cards, gift certificates, coupons, store credit, or membership credits to please use them by that date.
While this chapter is ending, I am grateful to share that it is not the end of independent bookselling in downtown Fargo. We are working closely with a new, locally owned bookstore opening later this year, advising a brand-new owner as they step into this industry — sharing both what I’ve learned and the mistakes I’ve made along the way. I wholeheartedly encourage our customers and the broader community to support this new store when it opens and to continue championing independent bookstores. Look for Overbooked coming this spring/summer!
Though the doors are closing, the impact of what we built together does not disappear. Ferguson Books was never just a business to me; it was a mission, a calling, and a season of life I will always carry with gratitude and pride.

About The Owners
Meet Dane & Elizabeth Ferguson
Dane and Elizabeth Ferguson launched their entrepreneurial journey in Grand Forks, North Dakota, driven by a shared love of books and community. Since then, their business has grown to include stores in Bismarck, Dickinson, and West Fargo before recently opening their newest location in downtown Fargo.
Both graduates of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, the Fergusons bring a blend of educational passion and entrepreneurial spirit to their work. Elizabeth, a former elementary school teacher, and Dane, a lifelong entrepreneur, are on a mission to share their love of the written word across North Dakota and beyond.
When they’re not in the store, Dane and Elizabeth enjoy cheering on their sons in football, basketball, and track—and never miss a chance to catch a UND [Go Sioux!], Minnesota Timberwolves, or Vikings game.

SHOPPING LOCAL MATTERS
Book Trades
Effective immediately, Ferguson Books will allow ONLY 50 BOOKS TOTAL per visit per day for trading in your used books. Due to staffing concerns, anything larger than that, whether it be for trade-in credits or outright donation, need to call in advance for an appointment so we can dedicate the time for the care of your books and ensure the appropriate staff is on hand to serve your needs better. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

General Book Trade Guidelines
1) We will take in any book, DVD/BLURAY or CD you bring in LEGALLY. This means that it is yours to give to us and not the property of someone else.
2) Items that we WILL NOT membership Credit for include:
Outdated (Finance, Reference, Health, Self-Help, Diet and textbook)
Damaged Materials (This includes, but is not limited to, Water, Smoke, Oil, Mold, Pet, etc)
Poor Quality Products (This includes tears/scratches, broken spines, missing pages/dust-cover, folded corners, warped, severely bent covers, etc)
Low Grade Small Paperbacks (i.e. Printed before the year 2020, Harlequin Romances, Danielle Steele)
3) Please allow 10-30 minutes for each trade!
Bag Sales & Pop-Up Shops
Ferguson Books needed a way to alleviate its full shelves--even shortly after moving to a store 3 times the size! Almost by accident they tried something called a "bag sale" and allowed customers to check out their backstock of overstocked used books. It was so popular, Ferguson's did the event regularly throughout the year.
In 2018 Ferguson Books wanted to see if this Bag Sale would be popular outside of Grand Forks, trying out the larger city to the south--Fargo. It went gangbusters! We now bring along with us best-sellers, and much more!
Since then, Ferguson's have brought their 2-day pop-up shop and Bag Sale all over the Midwest! Check out the cities below:
